The Mt. Carmel Woman’s Club is an affiliate of GFWC (General Federation of Women’s Clubs) and GFWC Illinois. GFWC is an international philanthropic organization dedicated to community improvement by enhancing the lives of others through volunteer service. GFWC is comprised of approximately 80,000 members worldwide and provides support for charities such as St. Judes Children’s Hospital, March Of Dimes, Children’s Research Hospital, Operation Smile, Domestic Violence Awareness and Child Advocacy Programs, along with many others. This year, GFWC Illinois is celebrating its 125th Anniversary.
The Mt. Carmel Woman’s Club was organized and federated in 1938. Over the years, club members have volunteered their time and fundraising efforts to benefit the local community in such ways as partnering to establish the Mt. Carmel Public Library, fundraising for the city leaf vac system, as well as scholarships for college students. At times, the club also provides donations to various community organizations, such as Safe Haven, Hope Pregnancy Center, the Wabash County Animal Shelter, the Senior Citizens Center, The Guardian Center and SWAN.
New for this year, the Woman’s Club will be making and distributing “Welcome Baskets” to new residents in Mt. Carmel. As a way of welcoming new residents into our community, they would like to provide them with some helpful information that would enable them to navigate through the various businesses and services that are available in Mt. Carmel and encourage them to become a part of our community. They would also like to encourage any businesses or organizations that would like to have their information included in the baskets to feel free to contact them.
Also, the club would like to invite members of the community to attend their monthly club meetings, and their district meetings, if they are interested in joining the club, or would like to learn more about our organization. The club generally meets on the first Monday of each month at 1:00 pm at the Mt. Carmel Public Library or at a member’s house at 403 N Cherry St. Find them on Facebook or contact them by phone at 704-502-1130 for meeting updates. “We welcome new members!!”
